The Problem: Approximately 250,000 people die prematurely each year from asthma, but almost all of these deaths are avoidable. Mercy Hospital in Springfield was experiencing a high number of pediatric hospitalizations because of asthma—many of these were avoidable, but kids and their parents weren't reading the information they were given to learn how to prevent asthma attacks.
The Solution: In addition to an asthma awareness campaign, the project included a revamp of Mercy's current educational materials. Everything was condensed into one easy-to-read activity book, aimed at making the material more easy to understand for both kids and their parents. Characters and stickers were created so children could familiarize themselves with their asthma triggers, and emergency care card stickers and patches were created so kids could keep their medical information with them at school in coats, backpacks, or notebooks.
